Aims and Objectives
- The aim of Cannulation Awareness is to equip healthcare professionals with essential knowledge and skills to perform safe and effective cannulation, focusing on infection control, patient assessment, equipment use, aseptic technique, monitoring, documentation and removal.
- Understand the significance of adhering to strict infection control protocols, including hand hygiene and PPE, when performing cannulation.
- Learn the importance of obtaining informed consent, explaining the procedure, its purpose and potential risks to patients or their legal guardians.
- Gain proficiency in patient assessment, including evaluating medical history, allergies and vein suitability based on size, condition and location.
- Acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to ensure access to appropriate sterile cannulation equipment and verify equipment integrity and expiration dates.
- Understand the techniques for proper site selection, aseptic insertion and securement, continuous monitoring, documentation and safe removal of cannulas, while minimising the risk of complications.
